Description
2D global fields of monthly mean seaice effective snow thickness (m) interpolated to a 1/2 degree grid. The state variable is part of the 1992-2015 ECCO version 4 release 3 state estimate [Fukumori et al. 2017; http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/110380]. The time-evolving physical state is produced through a least-squares fit of the MIT general circulation model (MITgcm) to much of the available satellite and in-situ observations by means of gradient-based nonlinear inversion or optimal control using the adjoint or Lagrange multiplier method [Wunsch and Heimbach 2013; http://doi.org/10.1016/B978-0-12-391851-2.00021-0]. The solution is produced on the nominally 1-degree so-called LLC90 horizontal grid, with 50 vertical levels. The solution is free of artificial interior sources or sink of heat, salinity, or momentum, and thus dynamically and kinematically consistent with known equations of motion. Uncertain control variables that are subject to joint inversion include 3D initial conditions, time-varying 2D surface boundary conditions (atmospheric state variables), and time-mean 3D mixing parameters of the MITgcm. Details of the model configuration, observational constraints, and control variables are described in Forget et al. 2015 [http://doi.org/10.5194/gmd-8-3071-2015].
